I can’t say this with any scientific backing, but I think the chimes help induce a deeper, more engaged train of thought than I normally enjoy while working (ask anyone–I’m a notoriously shallow thinker), and I find myself less distracted by thoughts outside of the work at hand. In this app, I’m inclined to keep at my writing tasks for longer periods of time, I’m less antsy, and I feel more creative than I do with more conventional apps. In practice, I find OmmWriter’s approach incredibly effective. The premise, it seems, is that if your monkey mind has a small amount of additional input to play with, you’ll be less compelled to break your concentration away from the task at hand. OmmWriter adds subtle background images and soundscapes to enhance your focus.OmmWriter represents a compelling departure from the conventional wisdom about focus and productivity, acknowledging the mind’s natural tendency to wander and satisfying that tendency with just enough visual and auditory stimuli to prevent you from breaking away from your work altogether. Simple visual backgrounds offer your peripheral vision a break from the text on the screen without actively drawing your attention away from what you’re writing. Your mind settles into a steady stream of consciousness as soothing white-noise audio effects play gently in the background. Paired with a keyboard, writing with OmmWiter on the iPad is virtually indistinguishable from writing with OmmWriter on a PC or Mac. Users of the PC and Mac versions of OmmWriter will be pleased to find some of the same meditative soundscapes and landscapes on the iPad that they’ve come to know on the desktop, and a few new ones too. Where most other apps of its kind are designed to offer little more than a minimalist screen to write on, OmmWriter adds in a variety of wallpapers and sound schemes designed to deepen your immersion in what you’re writing. Just released on the App Store today, the $5 OmmWriter for iPad app packs some cool and unusual mind-clearing features that raise the bar for distraction-free writing apps. If your child is aged 12 years or over, you should start your school search and application process as early as possible. Expect higher demand and greater competition. There is somewhat less choice of international schools in Phnom Penh for high school or secondary school-aged children. Always do your research, and arrange a visit to the school and a meeting with staff if possible. Some lack globally recognised accreditation and their education standards may not live up to your expectations. Every school calls themselves ‘international’, but don’t be fooled by this. While the number of international schools in Phnom Penh is growing rapidly, beware that some are more legitimate than others. There are international schools scattered throughout Phnom Penh in almost all central areas. The majority of Cambodia’s international schools are located in the capital, so there is no better city to base yourself if schooling is a priority. There has been a sharp increase in the number of international schools in Phnom Penh in recent years. The standards and facilities on offer are also getting better and better all the time. There is seriously good value for money in Cambodia’s capital, especially when compared to other Asian capitals like Beijing, Seoul or Singapore. So, an international school is the preferred option for the vast majority of expats in Phnom Penh.īefore you start panicking about how much an international school in Asia will cost you, know this: Phnom Penh ranks as the cheapest city in Asia for international education. Teaching is through the Khmer language - a significant barrier for most non-natives - and expat children are usually not permitted to attend public schools anyway. The standard of education in Cambodia’s public schools is low when compared to global standards. ![]() As for the trade itself, now more than ever open to second-guessing, I’ll have more on that in a subsequent post. None of them, including Pettitte, are likely to be the pitcher that Pineda was in the first 15 starts of his major-league career (2.45 ERA, 94 strikeouts in 95.2 innings), but they don’t have to be they just have to be a little better than average and let the offense do the rest. ![]() Mitchell, who looked terrific during spring training, could get chances. Further down the line, touted prospects Dellin Betances, currently getting raked at Triple-A, Adam Warren (likewise), Manny Banuelos (on the Triple-A DL with a sore back) and sinkerballer D.J. Rookie David Phelps, who has pitched quite well in long relief, is another possibility. First in line is the veteran Andy Pettitte, rebuilding his strength at Double-A Trenton as I write these words. They would undoubtedly be better Should the starters, particularly back-end rotations pitchers Phil Hughes (pitching against the Rangers as these words float gently to the page) and Freddy Garcia continue to struggle, the Yankees have plenty of alternatives. Yankees starting pitching has been mediocre so far, but they are leading the league in runs scored per game, so they have some leeway in terms of support, and the bullpen has been the best in the league. As I joked on Twitter earlier, the Yankees entered Wednesday night’s game on a pace to win 95 games without Pineda. Were his second-half 2011 or spring training struggles indicative of a incipient problem? We will never know. In other words, an MRI wouldn’t necessarily have shown Yankees or Mariners doctors that Pineda was going to be hurt, just that he was or was not hurt. They can spot things that are there, but not things that aren’t, and as finely detailed as they are, there are some anomalies that escape their notice. Cashman:Īs a cancer survivor who has undergone numerous MRIs, usually in a state of terrified claustrophobia, I can tell you that they aren’t prescient. ![]() The Yankees say there is no question of damaged good that Pineda underwent more than one MRI and the labrum tear was not seen. More will be known after the surgery has been performed and doctors have better visualized the injury. Then there is Erik Bedard, Ted Lilly and Brandon Webb, halfway to a Hall of Fame career The key here is, there are tears and there are tears, and as things go, right now, the thought is that Pineda’s is the former rather than the latter. His teammate, Kerry Wood, had labrum surgery in 2005, and he’s had a career since then, just not the same career as a dominating starter. Now, Prior also had surgery on just about every other part of the arm you can have surgery on, so don’t overreact to that cautionary tale-he’s the everything bagel of defective pitchers. Still, there is no guarantee that Pineda will recover and be the proto-ace that the Yankees thought they were getting-consider that Mark Prior is one of those that had labrum surgery in the past. In Pineda’s case, the tear should be approachable via arthroscopic means, by definition, a less invasive procedure. The labrum is just not in a very accessible spot and often requires open shoulder surgery. Labrum surgery is a far more daunting problem for a pitcher than, say, Tommy John surgery. Well, he’s not looking down the barrel anymore-the gun has gone off in his face. ![]() As for those with a sweet tooth, they serve kunafa and many other traditional sweets. These DFWI rates are especially high in introductory and gateway courses (Koch & Drake, 2019). But colleges and universities have also experienced increasing DFWI rates, which refers to the number of Ds, Fs, withdrawals, and incompletes awarded in courses (Koch & Drake, 2019). Over the past 30 years, higher education has become more accessible (Vieira et al., 2020). ![]() Thinking deeply about how we structure our courses has become increasingly important. Many USU instructors have shown dedication to excellence in teaching through thoughtful course design, with an explicit goal of helping students succeed in college. As Steven Gavazzi (2019), author of Land-Grant Universities for the Future, explained at the USU Empowering Teaching Excellence Conference, land-grant universities provide a key service to their communities-to “support equitable access to all formats of learning.” With a large statewide campus system that is committed to strong in-person teaching, equitable online learning, and a sincere dedication to nontraditional and first-generation students, USU embodies Gavazzi’s ideal. ![]() This three-pronged mission is what makes USU a premier land-grant institution, one dedicated to innovation in teaching and learning. “We champion exceptional education, research and discovery, and community contribution,” the strategic document emphasizes. This is evidenced in USU’s three-part “Strategic Direction,” which lists teaching first. Unlike many R1 institutions of higher learning, which can shy away from teaching excellence as a core component of their mission, USU actively encourages exceptional college-level teaching. But research, though crucial for knowledge production, is not the only thing that USU department chairs, deans, and administrators care about. The R1 designation means that our faculty and graduate students must meet high standards of research productivity and innovation. USU is a land-grant university that carries the prestigious R1 (or “very high research activity”) classification from the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education. In the 21st century, this commitment is more important than ever, especially at an institution like Utah State University. Doing so, we hope, will demonstrate USU’s commitment to offering a strong educational experience for our students. In Habits of Mind: Designing Courses for Student Success, we bring together 32 transformative USU instructors who, in 22 chapters, highlight their experiences in developing the Habits of Mind framework in the courses they teach. To underscore the pedagogical possibilities of remaking college courses, we have assembled the perspectives of USU faculty, instructors, and learning specialists from across the University in a single edited volume. Our belief that USU offers a strong model for education compelled us to edit this collection. ![]() Though we may be biased, we believe that USU is an innovator in combining the rigorous teaching of content knowledge with an emphasis on study skills. USU’s most transformative educators continue to cultivate these skills and dispositions throughout the undergraduate course of study. Before they even begin their formal coursework, USU students start learning about the study skills that will help them thrive, not only in college but in their careers. Utah State University (USU) instructors are particularly adept at providing study skills and academic competencies throughout the undergraduate curriculum. If students are not prepared for these postsecondary education challenges, then it is fair to say that college faculty have failed them. If we do not focus on skills-building in college courses, students will not be prepared for the challenges that await them after they leave institutions of higher education. To “grow their capacity as efficacious thinkers to navigate and thrive in the face of unprecedented change” (Costa et al., 2023), students must learn and improve important study skills and academic dispositions throughout their educational careers. Although content knowledge remains at the heart of college teaching and learning, forward-thinking instructors recognize that we must also provide 21st-century college students with transferable skills (sometimes called portable intellectual abilities) to prepare them for their futures (Vazquez, 2020 Ritchhart, 2015 Venezia & Jaeger, 2013 Hazard, 2012).
